Black Mirror Experience Makes US Debut at The Shed
The Black Mirror Experience, a new immersive production inspired by the hit television series, will make its United States debut at The Shed in New York on 20 June.
The experience is scheduled to run for a limited period ending in September. Participants will enter an original story set within the dystopian universe created by Charlie Brooker. The production centres on themes including artificial intelligence, virtual reality, digital avatars and the collection of personal biometric data.
Combining virtual reality technology with physical sets, the experience places participants inside the fictional world of Phaethon, a technology corporation named after the Greek sun god. Visitors are introduced to the company during its grand opening event, where it is preparing to launch a humanoid robot known as LifeAgent.
In the story, LifeAgent is presented as a technology that learns about its users and anticipates their needs. The product is intended to improve daily life by collecting and analysing personal information. As participants progress through the experience, events begin to deteriorate, and the narrative develops around the consequences of the technology being introduced.
Groups of up to six participants move through the story during an approximately one-hour experience. Before entering, each participant creates a personal avatar by providing facial and voice data to an artificial intelligence system. These digital identities become part of the experience as the storyline develops.
Organisers have stated that no prior knowledge of Black Mirror is required. The production addresses subjects widely associated with the television series, including surveillance, privacy, artificial intelligence, consciousness, and the role of technology in forming human behaviour. These themes form the basis of the narrative and are integrated into both the virtual and physical elements of the experience.
The Black Mirror Experience was developed by the Paris-based entertainment company Banijay Live Studio in partnership with the technology firm Univrse. The companies worked together to create a hybrid production that combines the immersive capabilities of virtual reality with a real-world environment. The project was designed to place participants inside a story while allowing them to interact with both digital and physical settings.
The production first appeared in the immersive competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May. It received the Special Jury Prize in the category dedicated to virtual reality, augmented reality and other forms of spatial storytelling. The award recognised the project among a group of works focused on emerging immersive technologies and interactive experiences.
Following its appearance at Cannes, the Black Mirror Experience opened at Montreal’s Infinity Experience venue. The New York engagement at The Shed will run concurrently with another presentation at Espacio Delicias in Madrid, enabling audiences in multiple countries to take part in the production during the same period.
The Shed, located in New York’s Hudson Yards district, has become a prominent venue for large-scale immersive works and mixed-reality productions. The arts centre was designed by the architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro and has hosted a range of projects which combine technology and performance.
Among its previous presentations was a mixed-reality concert experience featuring composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto. The venue also staged Viola’s Room, a headphone-guided installation created by immersive theatre company Punchdrunk. In addition, it presented An Ark, which was described as the first play created specifically for mixed reality.
The arrival of the Black Mirror Experience adds another technology-focused production to The Shed’s programme. The experience places participants inside a fictional technology launch, including virtual reality, artificial intelligence, biometric data and digital avatars into a unified narrative environment.
The New York presentation marks the first time the production has been staged in the United States. It’s run at The Shed, following earlier appearances in France and Canada, and coincides with the Madrid engagement. The limited New York season runs through September, giving audiences the opportunity to experience the hour-long immersive story set in the world of Black Mirror.
